Orange Ball
Orange Ball Tennis is the first phase of junior competition run by Tennis Geelong. The balls have a customised weight and bounce to accommodate developing skills and abilities. Juniors may play several seasons in this competition to help develop their long term skills. There are no ladders or finals.
It is played on a modified court size, with nets reduced to 80cm and lighter balls. The sets are played to 4, with "sudden death" at 40:40 (deuce). Serving is modified, with the first serve being normal but if faulted the second serve may be taken from the service line, underarm or even thrown over the net into the service square.
The team plays x4 single sets (1 per player) and x2 double sets.
All Orange Ball games are umpired - with umpires supporting children through where to stand, when to step up to serve, reinforcing good behaviour and sportmanship, and encouraging them to play. Umpires keep track of the score. Wherever possible parents are encouraged not to umpire their child's game.
