Danny Vélez (He/Him)

When I arrived in Hobart, one of the first things I did was look for a tennis club. I searched ‘tennis club in Hobart’ on Facebook, and HOT was the first result. I messaged to ask how to join, and Sam, then Brendon, invited me to their Tuesday social at the Domain. I turned up and only then realised it was a queer tennis club (at the time, I didn’t actually know what ‘Out’ meant!).

The surprise was brilliant: affordable fees, all levels welcome, beautiful courts used for international tournaments, kunanyi/Mt Wellington in the background, and even a bucket of lollies between matches. But what really won me over was the warmth, the smiles, and the kind vibe from everyone, the Hotties of Tasmania. HOT is a tennis community that, regardless of your orientation, tennis level, age or background, always keeps its doors open to anyone who just wants to have a hit and have fun in a safe, inclusive, diverse and very cool environments.

After spending more time at the club, playing regularly, entering tournaments (winning a few, losing many more), learning doubles, and making great friends, I started helping out with initiatives like the GLTA International and the club’s rebrand. That involvement grew, and I eventually took on a new challenge. Now, as part of the Committee for Marketing and Comms, my goal is to help the club become the first and most iconic queer tennis club in Australia. But more than anything, it’s about keeping the fund and the good vibes along the way.  Welcome!
