Rod Oliver-Ewen (He/Him)

I joined HOT the day I marched in the Hobart Pride Festival with them in 2021. As someone who pursued individual sports but was not very confident playing tennis, it took the encouragement from the HOT social members for me to give it a try. And there was no turning back. I met some wonderful people. They took me under their wing. I made some friends, found a doubles partner, played frequently and made it to the beginner level final the next year. With the support of the club, I improved in my singles game and went from barely knowing how to hold a racquet to winning the beginner level singles final a few years later.

I joined the HOT committee to repay my service to the club for the support and inspiration they gave me. I have volunteered at tournaments the club hosted by welcoming players at the gate and assisting with tickets and logistics. But mostly being an approachable point of contact and helping others to fit in, feel comfortable and enjoy the events. I plan to be useful to the club by helping run social tennis and other events, knowing that there may be people out there like me who were tempted to join in but needed a gentle push.
