2024 Event

2024 Junior and Senior Club Championships

The 2024 Club Championships were held on Sunday 17 November, and what a day it was

Around one hundred people attended during the day to watch the juniors play from 9am.

The match play was organised masterfully by our Club Coach Paul Rowbottom who had to overcome late entries (one on the day), late with-drawls (one with COVID and two with timing commitments), rain interruption, and late finish.

Food and refreshment were also provided masterfully with volunteer sandwich makers, BBQ managers (including having to race off for a new bottle of gas as the old gas bottle died out), and the often forgotten cleaner-upperers.

Fifteen junior players participated in the Junior Championships

And the winners were:

  • Open Singles
    • Winner – Jacob Stephens
    • Runner-up – Eli Bowker

  • Singles
    • Winner - Jack Mannix
    • Runner-up – Ava Mannix

  • Doubles
    • Winners – Sam Phillips & Nick Phillips

    • Runners-up – Jack Mannix and Ava Mannix

Threatening showers had slipped by in the morning but the wind whipped up after the juniors finished playing.

As we awaited the commencement of the senior events those attending enjoyed a fantastic spread of snacks, sandwiches, tea and coffee with cakes and biscuits as well as a sausage sizzle.

The seniors started early in the windy conditions, but it wasn’t long before rain sent the players scurrying to the safety of the clubhouse.

For about 45 minutes enjoyed more food and a great social atmosphere, with no-one giving up on the chance of more play.

And that chance came soon enough as the showers passed, and slowly the wind died down and the sun came out. Some even took the opportunity to have a hit on the adjacent netball courts.

Whilst there were no more weather interruptions, there were many closely fought matches across all events, and the applause and cheering from those watching on accompanied the play all the way through to 8:30pm.

With the late finish the two ladies who had won their way through top the final agreed to defer playing the match, and it was agreed that this would be held at 3pm on Saturday 21 December, to be followed by a Phillip Island Tennis Club Christmas Party Dinner (more details to follow).

Another highlight of the afternoon was the hard work of volunteer ball-boy Sammy Phillips who worked hard, and very professionally, to help those playing in some of the hard fought singles matches.
