Club History

Offically formed on 14 April 1954, the Phillip Island Tennis Club has grown, with the help of many community minded people, to become an important part of the fabric of activity on the island.

Getting established was not easy, with competing interests of the existing local football and gymkhana clubs, and the need for a site for a proposed bowling club, but a ten year lease agreement was finally established with the Shire of Phillip Island, and then the hard work began.

After levelling the site, two (hand mixed) concrete courts were laid and working bees enabled a fence to be erected, allowing the courts to be opened on 21 November 1954.

A "shelter" consisting of tree brush walls and an iron roof built by volunteers was used until a  permanent "afternoon tea shed", serving both the football club and the tennis club was built in 1956

Lighting was added in 1961, and two more courts in 1964. Lighting for all courts was provided in 1967, but it wasn't until 2012 that a coin machine was fitted to enable the lights to be turned on by players hiring the courts.

The existing clubhouse was erected in 1975 and dedicated to the late G F (Snow) Dixon in recognition of his efforts and hard work in establishing the Phillip Island Tennis Club. Alterations in 1997 added two toilets and a Kiosk for the football club, and this area was taken over by the cricket club in 2014 after alternative facilities were provided for the football club.

With the aid of grants from Tennis Victoria and Bass Coast Shire, the concxrete courts were converted to artificial grass in 2008.
