SunSmart Policy

At East Burwood Tennis, we have an internal policy to guide members and the management committee on how to protect ourselves from harmful sun UV rays all year round whether we are playing tennis or relaxing with friends outdoors.  All in all, we follow mainly guidelines of the widely accepted SunSmart policy as 'tools' to protect us from harmful sun UVs. East Burwood Tennis Sun Protection Policy

Rationale: Research and records have shown that the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main cause of skin cancer. UV damage also causes sunburn, tanning, premature ageing and eye damage. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. However, skin cancer is preventable.

Sporting clubs where players are exposed to sunlight have a responsibility under health and safety legislation to provide and maintain a safe working environment for staff, volunteers, players and spectators. By minimising UV harm, you will help to fulfil this obligation and duty of care.

Shade: The Club will

- maximise the use of natural shade provided by buildings, trees and other structures.

- provide shade structures for spectator seating.

- continue to provide shaded areas for outdoor entertaining areas.

Sun protection times: The sun protection times from the Bureau of Meteorology forecast the time-of-day UV levels are due to reach 3 or higher. At these levels, sun protection is recommended for all skin types.

Schedules, fixtures and rule modifications: Where possible, training, events and competitions are scheduled to minimise exposure to UV and heat.

Sun protection measures: comprises of

Clothing: The club will promote officials’ and referees’ use of sun-protective clothing. This should include:

- shirts or tops with long sleeves and a collar

- wide-brimmed or Legionnaires hats

Sunscreen

- The Club promotes SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen.

- Participants are encouraged to apply sunscreen 20 minutes before training or playing and to reapply every two hours or immediately after sweating or towelling dry.

- Sunscreen is stored below 30°C and replaced once it is past the use-by date.

Hats: Though normal hats and visors may help, wide-brimmed or Legionnaires hats are recommended for high UV days.

Shade:   When not actively playing or between individual events, participants are able to rest in shaded areas, and the shaded areas are available for all spectators

Sunglasses: Participants are advised to wear sunglasses that meet the Australian standard (ASNZS 1067:2016).

Policy Review: This Sun Protection policy will be reviewed annually and the policy was last updated on 24/06/2022
