70th Anniversary

Around 70 people attended the Phillip Island Tennis Club's 70th Anniversary Open Day on Sunday 14 April, many wearing the "white only" tennis attire of the time the club was formed.

Attendees included Life Members Leeston Hopkins, Betty Malloy, Craig Kent, Bob Niven,  and past office bearers Jack Hobbs, Lois Willcocks and Jacqui Marr (who had come all the way from Talbot, out past Ballarat.

Many others would have liked to attend but were unable to. Apologies were received from Alison and Rick Fitgerald, Mandy Walker, Pat and Geoff Storer (now in Bendigo), Marg Hill, Maria Kirwan, Mary Taylor, Naoko McRae, Andrew and Ken Sellers, Ann Goldsworthy, Pat Rose (now in Castelmaine), and Noel Burrell. Whilst Life Member and past President and Secretary Noel Burrell was unable to attend the event, he sent us a letter (click on link below to read) that was read out by Craig Kent.

Everyone shared some fantastic 1950's finger food and a sausage sizzle, and while some enjoyed catching up to reminisce about the "early days", others participated in a range of activities including face painting, colouring, a kids tennis session, and social tennis (with old wooden racquets!).

Several "competitions" were held:

Radar gun speed check winners - Jordy Medlar (Junior - 92km/hr) and Luke Zoanetti (Senior - 147km/hr)

Ball machine rally winners - Jordy Medlar (Junior - 9 shots) and Sandy Lone (Senior - 14 shots)

One-point game tournament winner - Geoff Clements. Runner-up -  Luke Zoanetti

1950's music quiz winners - Robyne Lunn and Jenny Dwyer

Guess the number of tennis balls in a bag winner - James Lone

After the competitions the club President thanked those who had contributed so much over the last 70 years to make the club the success it was today, and to everybody who had worked hard to make the Open Day a huge success. This was followed by a formal "cutting of the cake".
