2024 Club Champ
2024 Club Championships Decided
Oct 31st, 2024
The 2024 SHTC Club Championships took place from Saturday, October 19th, to Sunday, October 27th.
The event featured 16 participants in the men’s singles, 3 in the women’s singles, and 16 teams in the Open Doubles competition.
Over the course of two weekends, a total of 49 matches were played in good spirits across all categories.
We would like to thank to all the participants who participated and contributed to making this event special, particularly those who accommodated for the tight schedule due a variety of court and scheduling constraints.
The weather has been kind to us and we have always been on schedule throughout the Championships, which makes it much easier for the semi-finals and grand finals.
The Open Doubles Grand Final match between Ed Smithers / Rick Haydon and Liam Greening / James Moore took many twists and turns, with Liam and James taking the first set and the second set being quite even. In the end, Ed and Rick gradually got on top to win in a Super Tiebreaker 3rd set after drawing level through a second set tiebreaker to claim the 2024 Doubles Championship.
The Women’s Singles had a round-robin format, with Hayley Ta, Samanthan Mark and last year’s Champion Yuko Ema participating. In the end Yuko won both her singles matches to win the 2024 Women’s Singles Championship, with Samantha Mark being the Runner-up.
The Men’s Singles Grand Final started just after 3pm with last year’s Champion George Batziakas facing off Nassim Belbaly. The match was very much like the Open Doubles final and went right down to the wire. After losing the first set, George claimed a very tightly contested second set, before Nassim won the Super Tiebreaker 3rd set to be crowned the Men’s Singles Club Champion for 2024.
On the Grand Finals Sunday afternoon, the club also organised social tennis and a BBQ, with a VIP presentation of the trophies and prizes to the winner and runners-up in late afternoon. A special thanks to Anthony Green, who again voluntarily brought additional food and enthusiasm to the afternoon, and Paul Katz, who tirelessly manned the BBQ single-handedly.
