Information if you are new to competition tennis

If you have never played competition tennis before or it has been a long time please read on to see what options are available for you.

Night Tennis

Night tennis runs Monday nights through to Thursday nights with Mondays being womens only.  Tuesdays to Thursdays is open to teams consisting of both men and women and is more based on ability than sex.  So a team of 4 men could compete against a team of 2 men and 2 women etc.

If you have a group of friends that want to play together you can enter a whole team or the club can find you a team to join.  It's a great way to meet new people.   Play is doubles and you will play 3 sets, one with each of your team members.   When there is no covid restrictions most teams enjoy socialising after the match and having some food and drinks with the opposition.  This is by no means compulsory but once you see a decent cheese plate it is hard to walk away!

Competition is a home and away format in the Blackburn and district region and play begins at 7.20pm with a warm up starting at 7 with the opposition.

Night tennis has many sections ranging from newcomers to the game through to highly competitive teams.

If you would like to learn more please contact our night tennis convener: Kelly Wright on 0411 471 501.

On Tuesdays Heatherdale competes in the MEMRLTA  (encompassing Eastern Metropolitan Melbourne) association and currently has 2 teams.

On Thursdays Heatherdale competes in the Ferntree Gully and District Association and currently have 3 teams.

Saturday afternoon

Saturday afternoon consists of two formats that you can choose between.  One is all doubles sets, where you play in a team of 4 people and play 3 sets to 8 with each of you team mates.    The other format is singles and doubles, also with 4 in your team, where you play 1 doubles set with 1 other team mate and everyone plays a singles rubber.  This is best of 3 sets with the third set played as a tie breaker to 10 points rather than a full set.

The teams can be made up of either men or women and is based on playing level rather than gender.

There is a winter season and a summer season.

Pennant

Men's Pennant runs on a Saturday afternoon from the end of April through to the end of August.

This year pennant has trialled a new format so instead of singles one week and doubles the next, singles and doubles is now played in the same week.  Two eight game sets is played for the doubles pairs, so each pair only plays one set of doubles and then everyone will play a singles rubber consisting of best of three sets with a tie break instead of a full third set.   Heatherdale has teams playing section 2 and 3.

Womens Pennant runs on a Saturday morning starting at 9am, alongside the Juniors.  Heatherdale has 1 womens team playing in section 2  and would love to include some more players.  It runs the same format as the mens with singles and doubles on the same week.

If you are interested in playing Pennant please contact Jarrod Savage on  0411 668 259.

Juniors

Juniors participate in the Eastern Region Tennis Inc. which is one of the largest suburban tennis associations in Melbourne. There are two seasons throughout the year, Winter (April to September) and Summer (October to March).  There are opportunities to play either all doubles sets or singles and doubles as you progress into the higher sections.

Competition runs on a Saturday morning with play commencing at 830 and finishing by 1230.  Although you may finish earlier.
