Brief History

Bullen Tennis Club was started in 1962 by the Bulleen Women’s Group. The group approached the local council of the time (the City of Doncaster and Templeton), who agreed to build them two courts.

As a clubhouse was a requirement of participating in the local competitions, a brick toilet block was built and used while the club raised the money to build a proper clubhouse.

When the new clubhouse was built two years later, the original block was incorporated and fitted with toilets to form the ladies’ bathroom section.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, Bulleen Tennis Club reached a peak of around 800 members, with hundreds more on a waiting list. Applicants were required to complete a skills test in front of committee members to prove they could play tennis.

Member numbers took a hit when Saturday afternoon shopping was introduced in the late 1970s. Young members opted for part-time retail work instead of playing the main Saturday afternoon competition.

Notable names to play for the club include Jaimee Foulis, a finalist in the Australian Open 2022 Mixed Doubles, and Warren Maher, who reached a world ranking of 98 in singles and twice reached the third round of the Australian Open in the 1980s. Additionally, Collingwood AFL players Bob Greve, Tony, Mark, and Brian Beers have competed for the club and have been crowned club champions through the years.

The club was incorporated in 1986 and soon after hosted an International Tennis Federation Futures Tournament.

From its small beginnings, the club continues to prosper and serve the Tennis Community.
