Pennant Season Recap

This season we had two mens teams entered into Tennis Victoria pennant, the biggest tennis competition run statewide every winter.

The first team was in grade 9 playing senior competition for their first time since graduating from the junior ranks. They managed to qualify for the semi final by finishing fourth, but unfortunately they were eliminated in the first round of finals. A fantastic season for them especially considering their lack of experience playing in mens competition.

Our other team played in grade 5 and impressively managed to win the entire competition. Playing and winning through 5 rounds of finals the season culminated in a tightly contested battle with Grace Park TC for the pennant. It didn’t start well with the unbeaten combination of Evan and Taso Vasiliadis losing 8-6 in the first rubber, we quickly bounced back though with Christian Fabre and Winston Szutu taking back the lead with an emphatic 8-4 win in the number 2 doubles. In the singles experience prevailed with our number 1 Taso claiming a 6-2 6-3 win, followed by Evan going down 6-3 6-4 at number 3. Winston also lost 6-3 6-1 in the number 4 singles which meant Christian needed to win in straight sets in the final rubber of the day. Fortunately he was able to prevail 6-2 6-4 in order to win the tie by just 2 games. A hard fought win to bring home to flag which will be framed and displayed in the clubhouse soon.

A successful for season for both teams! If you have any interest in playing pennant next season please don’t hesitate to contact our senior convenor Christian Fabre at 0421129916. We would especially like to include a woman’s team next season so we are equally represented as a club in all competitions!
