A Night That Shapes the Season Ahead

Once a year, the racquets are rested and the focus shifts from the court to the people who keep Bayswater North Tennis Club moving forward. On 30 July 2024, members gathered for the club’s 94th Annual General Meeting, a night that reflected on a year of effort, resilience and community spirit, while setting the direction for the future.

The meeting opened with a strong sense of gratitude. The President thanked committee members and volunteers whose behind‑the‑scenes work continues to hold the club together. From running successful Bunnings BBQ fundraisers to maintaining facilities and supporting competitions, it was clear that this had been another positive year for the club.

One of the standout achievements was the impact of fundraising efforts. Proceeds from Bunnings BBQs played a vital role in funding the replacement of fencing along the flats side of the courts, an improvement that had taken patience and persistence to achieve. Ongoing discussions with neighbouring property managers highlighted the challenges that come with maintaining a shared environment, but also the club’s commitment to safety and long‑term care of its facilities.

The meeting also highlighted progress beyond the fence line. The club has strengthened its connection with Tennis Victoria and Maroondah Council, taking part in discussions around the Thriving Tennis Communities review. Bayswater North Tennis Club continues to have a voice in shaping the future of tennis in the region, ensuring the club remains visible, supported and included in broader planning.

On the court, there was plenty to celebrate. The Midweek Ladies team recorded a fantastic achievement, winning their Section 2 final and earning promotion to Section 1. Night tennis also showed positive momentum, with teams competing strongly and a men’s side reaching finals after missing out the previous season. These results reflect the steady strength of competition play across the club.

Attention was also given to the practical realities of running a community club. Rising utility costs, court maintenance, line repairs and storage needs were discussed, alongside the introduction of electronic payment options to make fees and fundraising more accessible and efficient.

Committee positions were filled unopposed, offering welcome stability, with members acknowledging the contribution of those stepping down and warmly welcoming new faces into key roles. The importance of volunteers was a recurring theme, as was the need to plan carefully for the years ahead. With challenges facing community sport nationwide, the club reaffirmed its commitment to developing a long‑term strategic plan focused on financial stability, membership growth and facility maintenance.

The meeting closed not just with motions passed, but with a shared understanding of what makes Bayswater North Tennis Club special. It is a place built on effort, family connections and people who care deeply about its future.

As another season begins, the message was clear. The story of the club continues, written not just in results, but in commitment, community and belief.
