Weston Creek Tennis Club Championships Report 2025

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Weston Creek Tennis Championships. With beautiful weather and great tennis, it was an outstanding event. In all we had close to 100 players who served and volleyed their way through over 250 wonderful matches.

In the Open Men’s Singles, newcomer, James Walbank played some brilliant tennis to defeat defending champion Tom Fuller, 6-2, 4-6 and 11- 9 in the breaker. In the doubles James teamed up with Liam Irving and they had a comfortable win over Tom Fuller and Nathan Franklin 6-2 ,6-0. The Open Ladies Singles was won in fine style by Marlese Van Lille who also defeated the defending champion, Holly Nolan, 6-2 6-2. Marlese completed a very successful weekend by partnering Michelle Tifan in the Open Ladies doubles. In a tight and competitive final, they defeated the veteran pairing of ever greens, Leonie Ainsworth and Ros Balodis. In the Open Mixed Final James Walbank collected his third trophy for the Carnival when he and partner, Millie Hanson, defeated Tom Fuller and Leonie Ainsworth 6-3, 6-4. The overall standard of all these matches was outstanding and truly shows the depth of talent within the Club.

In the B- Grade Division the Men’s Singles was won by the ‘Spin King’ Yosh Willis. He defeated the much-improved Manraj Singh 7-5,7-6 in a match that lasted most of Saturday afternoon. Charney Wells was the victor in the B-grade Ladies over coming Steph Betz in another epic final 5-7, 6-4, 10-7. In the Doubles Round Robin, mother daughter combination of Linda Barich and Karen Hosking defeated Steph Betz and Clair Dupont while in the Men’s, Manaraj Singh and Rajiv Dogra defeated Andrew Stuart and Mark Rendall. Andrew and Clair were able to collect a winner’s trophy by teaming up in the Mixed Doubles. They defeated Tom Patterson and Kirsten Vo.

In the Under 9 Singles, Jayden Mah defeated Sanushi Bandara while in the Under 12 Singles, Hunter Evans proved too strong for Bela Kochardy. In the Under 18 Girl’s singles, ACT Bruce Cup Rep, Adele Mewett won in straight sets, 7-5 6-2 over Julienne Cautivo. In the Boy’s Division, Ewan Lockley played some great tennis to defeat Clay Chadwick 6-2 6-0

As always, the Parent and Child Unisex Doubles was keenly contested. The Franklin’s retained the trophy they have won for the last three years. This time, dad, Nathan paired up with younger son, Adam to defeat Geoffrey Russell and Nik Maple.

Congratulations to all our participants and those who came along to support the players. Once again it was wonderful to welcome MP David Smith to the Club to present some trophies and a racquet to Flo Mewett our winner of the One Point Shoot Out. Canberra local and former top player, Alison Bai also dropped in to support the Event and to present some Awards.

Thanks to all who helped over the weekend, special thanks to the Planning Committee, Mark Walton, Max Rafferty, Tom Fuller, Osman Mewett, Andrew Stuart and Tony Laudenbach. Many hands make light work, and we invite other members to join the team to make 2026 even better.
