WCTC July Newsletter 2022

Welcome to the Weston Creek Tennis Club (WCTC) July Newsletter 2022.

President's Message

I hope the cold weather isn’t deterring you all from picking up your racquet and having a hit. With an extra layer of clothing on during winter you can still enjoy this wonderful game of tennis and the excellent facilities the club offers.

This Newsletter includes the results of our members’ survey which was issued some months ago. Dan Green has done an outstanding job in analysing and summarizing the responses. As you can see from his analysis, the majority of responses provided very positive feedback, with most being satisfied or very satisfied with what the club offers. However, some respondents did make particular comments about the need for the clubhouse to be refurbished, while some concerns were expressed about the availability of courts during peak times.

Dan presented his findings to the June Committee meeting and although the “individual comments” have not been included in this Newsletter, they were discussed at the meeting and will be considered and actioned, where appropriate. In particular, some members commented on the need to replace damaged tennis nets and this is now being arranged. Further, a number of younger respondents expressed a desire to have access to hardcourts. With the Labor Party being successful at the recent Federal elections, the club can now look forward to the provision of $800,000 for four new hardcourts. Although we have not been informed of a possible timeframe for this project, there is no doubt the addition of hardcourts to our facility will be popular with our younger members. You can find a summary of the survey results on our website HERE.

Maintenance and upgrade work continues to be undertaken around the club. Most importantly, the difficulties being experienced with the lights on court 1 have finally been resolved. Through the perseverance of Geoff Kotz, we have finally been able to have the court 1 lights fixed and now all 12 courts are once again available for booking at night. Well done Geoff!

Geoff, with assistance from Brian Chauncy and Phillip Stephens, has just about completed the laying of timber edging around the perimeter of the courts. Only some very minor work is required to finish off the project. This has proven to be a very labour intensive and time-consuming task and I can’t thank Geoff and his willing assistants enough for a great job.

Geoff has also been liaising with contractors to finalise arrangements for the replacement of the club’s aging entrance and main gate with a strong, steel security entrance and gate. The project is the result of the club being successful in obtaining funds from the Commonwealth Government’s Stronger Communities Program Round 7. The plans for the work are currently being finalised, with the final design allowing wide bodied vehicles though the gate , if required, as well as the entrance allowing easy access for bicycles, wheelchairs and walkers.

As part of the works, we recently engaged an artist to paint a mural on the wall of the clubhouse. The mural includes the club’s name as well as the club’s logo. A picture of the mural is included in this Newsletter. Although only recently completed, we are extremely pleased with the finished product and we have received many positive comments from our members.

Our Newsletters regularly thank Rebel Sport and the Canberra Southern Cross Club (CSCC) for their ongoing support of our club. I would particularly like to thank the CSCC who have supported our club in the last 12 months through their Community Rewards Program. Our club has received over $2,500 from the CSCC program in the last 12 months. I would encourage all our members who are also members of the CSCC to nominate the Weston Creek Tennis Club for the program and, consequently, 7.5% of your spend on food and beverage at any of the Woden, Tuggeranong, Jamison and Yacht Clubs will be returned to our club.

The Autumn Tennis League competition has now been completed and this Newsletter includes the results of the Weston Creek teams. Once again the club had great success in a number of Divisions. I would like to thank all those who participated in the Autumn League and to also congratulate the members who were successful in winning their Divisions. Once again, a big thank you goes to our Club League Coordinator, Dan Green, for organising the teams and doing everything possible to ensure all those who want to participate are placed in a team. If any member is interested in joining a League team, or wishes to find out more about the Tennis League, please contact Dan on mobile: 0415938772.

Finally, on a sour note, there was a recent incident at the club where money and a member’s car was stolen. This was the result of a young teenage boy entering through the unlocked gate, entering the clubhouse, and stealing money and car keys from an unattended bag. The incident occurred during a regular social tennis morning where many members were present.

It is particularly disturbing that these incidents are occurring. I would therefore ask that members remain vigilant while at the club, ensure the gate is properly closed after entering, and take appropriate steps to keep your property within sight. By taking these simple steps I am hopeful that these types of incidents will not occur in the future.

Recycling of Sport Shoes

Not sure what to do with your worn-out sports shoes? Through the “TreadLightly” national recycling initiative, unwanted sport and active lifestyle footwear can now be recycled by placing the shoes in disposal bins located at Rebel Sport’s Canberra Centre, Westfield Woden and Belconnen stores, as well as the Asics, Converse and New Balance stores at the Canberra Outlet Centre.

TreadLightly’s recycle initiative take the old footwear and recycles it into flooring for stores, gyms and playgrounds. A great initiative and one well worth supporting.
