Rules and Guidelines for Tennis Competitions WSNTG, WRTA, Vic Pennant & Mid Week Ladies:
General
- The committee's decision is final.
- By the first week of the season, all base team members must be full financial members of Altona TC.
- During team selections, current financial club members will be prioritised over potential members.
Selecting Teams
WSNTG & WRTA
- WSNTG and WRTA competitions teams are predominately social teams, often with a number of friends playing together, and the committee continues to honour this (within reason). The committee also expressly endeavours to include every member who has applied in an appropriatly graded team.
- For the 4 player team format, 6 people in a team is typically the optimum number. This ensures the team can rotate players to cover weeks when team members have other commitments. Teams with fewer than 6 players might be asked to accept additional players. For teams with more than 6 players, it might be requested that some players move to an alternative team, which might require extra players. This also ensures all players have the opportunity to play regularly.
- The above applies to the WRTA pennant 2 player teams too, except in this case 3 people is seen as the optimum number of players.
- When the committee is placing individual players into an established team, the committee will consider the relative player/team standard and social dynamics.
Vic Pennant
- The selection for Victoria Pennant teams is determined by the committee. The makeup of teams is based primarily on player level. Player level is determined primary by (non provisional) UTR rating and secondly committee opinion, if required.
- Teams should have at least 5 base players and teams of 6 base players are ideal.
- The committee also endeavours to honour requested friendship group teamings.
Mid Week Ladies WRTA Competition
- Teams are casually arranged. New applicants are welcome and will be placed in a team provided they can serve and sustain a short rally.
During the Season
Captain Responsibilities
- As a volunteer run club, we rely on our members to help run teams on a weekly basis. In particular, team captains are crucial to ensuring teams run smoothly. Match secretaries are here to support captains but we encourage teams to be responsible for their own team logistics and organisation.
- Captains are required to:
1. Create and manager the season roster
2. Pay the team's competition fee to the club
3. Organise approved tennis balls for home matches
4. Ensure scores are entered for home matches
5. Source emergency players, if required
6. Manage supper (WSNTG) or aternoon tea or lunch (WRTA)
7. Be the primary contact for the team
- For teams with excess base players (more than 2 people in WRTA pennant and more than 4 people in all the other competitions) captains are expected to produce a simple roster which indicates who is playing on a given day. The total number of times each player plays should be approximately balanced unless an alternative agreement has been made.
- Emergencies are not to be used if there are spare base team members wanting to play.
- Emergencies who are not Altona Tennis Club members are only allowed to play twice for Altona teams for a given season. An emergency player who plays in a team more than twice is required to join Altona Tennis Club as a financial member.
- If the above rules are not up-held and a complaint is made, the committee may intervene if necessary. If the complaint is found to be valid, a course of action could be taken .e.g. assigning a different captain.
- New 'base' players can be added to a team during the season, however they must have approval from the committee and be full financial members of the club.
Finals Teams Selection
Players picked for the final must of played at least 4 rubbers and must be full financial members. The finals team is to be agreed upon by all team members, the captain alone does not select the team. The typical selection criteria would be to pick the strongest team, however alternative selection criteria can be used if agreed upon by the team members. If a team agreement cannot be reached verbally, a ballot is to be ran where each team member votes on the 4 players to play the final. If a complaint is made regarding the finals team selection and the the above has not been followed in a fair and just manner, the committee may intervene and select the finals team based on picking the best team using player UTR ratings as the primary guide.
Team Member responsibilities
Team members are expected to:
- To be full financial members of the club by the first week of the season. If team players do not pay their fees in a timely manner, the committee may need to withdraw the player from the team.
- Support the captain in paying the comp fees within a week of being asked.
- Maintain courts: bag and water the courts and sweep the lines at the end of each set. If the courts are still obviously damp on cooler days or nights, just bagging is acceptable if all other players agree.
- Contribute to supper, afternoon tea or lunch. For players who are playing on a given day, they are all expeced to contribute approximately proportionally to supper, even if they don't attend. As a social and friendly club, we strongly encourage all team members to participate in supper, afternoon tea or lunch.
- Be reliable in attendance. In the event that a player cannot play on a day that they are rostered to play, they are expected to inform the captain and make the initial attempt at finding an emergency. In the event where a player does not show-up for play and does not inform any of their team mates, this could be grounds for removal from the team and/or a fine.
- Be punctual. If a player is more than 15 minutes late on 3 separate occassions, this could be grounds for removal from the team. Courts should prepped in a timely manner before the start of play.
- Be responsive to communications. When asked for a response regarding team/comp matters, respond within two days.
- Behave appropriately on and off the court and reflect Altona Tennis Club's values. We're a friendly and social club with a large junior cohort. All members are expected to model the highest standards of sportmanship. We have great competitors and we welcome friendly competition, but we do not tolerate any forms of aggression, bullying or any poor behaviour.
Multiple reports of unacceptible behaviour could be cause for removal from the team and/or club membership being cancelled. Complaint reports on players are typically for transgressions, including but not limited to: swearing, racquet abuse, multiple bad line calls and abusive or aggressive behaviour towards others, including other teams or members. Physical assault on another could be cause for immediate expulsion from the team and/or club.
