Jim Witheford Challenge

2019 Inaugural Jim Witheford Memorial Challenge

Big day today kicking off at 930am - the very first edition of our annual Jim Witheford Memorial Challenge, remembering our former president of 27 years, who passed away in January 2018.

Two Riverside pairs in the grand final; Roxie Holden and Owen Geale defeated Christine Egan and Greg Porter 6/4.

Some great tennis and social interaction during the day. Thanks to everybody who played, especially those visiting from other clubs. Thanks to everybody who contributed in other ways and those who came to watch. And thanks to Mr.Walker - bbq cooker, tennis player & bbq cleaner uperer; champion.

We will do it again same time next year.

2021 Jim Witheford Memorial Challenge

Family chemistry proved unbeatable on Sunday when Belinda and Fletcher Young won the second Jim Witheford Memorial Challenge.

Held at Riverside Tennis Club, the event saw 15 mixed doubled pairings split into three pools.

The Riverside Primary School pairing of Cathy Harvey and Ryan Walker emerged with a 4-0 record to book a semi-final spot, as did Deb Crick and Campbell Young.

Young’s younger brother and mother dropped their first match of they day but still topped the third pool, with Dasha Nepustilova and Dennis Harding qualifying for finals as the top-ranked second-place finisher.

A scintillating first semi-final saw Harvey and Walker edge Harding and Nepustilova 6-5, while two Youngs proved better than one in the second semi.

The Youngs then took out the final 6-4 to cap off an event which tournament supervisor Gabriella Holden said had been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from players.

The first Jim Witheford Memorial Challenge was held last year, honouring Riverside’s president of 27 years who died in 2018.

VICTORS: Mother-and-son combo Belinda and Fletcher Young.

2022 Jim Witheford Memorial Challenge

We were very fortunate to have a fine day  on which to play our annual Jim Witheford Memorial Challenge mixed doubles event. This honours our amazing former president of 27 years who passed away in 2018.

We had players from Legana, AIC, NTSC, Trevallyn, Longford, Ringarooma and Riverside.

Three of our four semi-finalists were undefeated in their pool matches. Fantastic semi finals; Belinda and Fletcher Young defeated Roxie Holden and Dennis Harding 6/4 and Mikayla and Daniel Binns defeated Liz Hadley and Greg Porter 6/4.

For the second year in a row, the Young’s enjoyed being the underdogs, having lost one of their pool matches, and went on to win an entertaining final 6/3. Congratulations.

Thank you everybody who came and participated.
