Metro Masters Competitions
This competition is for over 50 year old players (can include men and women) with teams nominating at least 5 players per team (more required generally for obvious reasons) with 4 or 5 players taking the court each week on Thursday afternoons.
With players playing in order all players in a 4 person team each play 3 sets, whilst if you play in a 5 person team the number 1 and 2 players play 3 sets and the numbers 3 to 5 play 2 sets each.
Two tennis courts are required for home and away matches with a total of six doubles sets played with each player playing with the other three players in their team - tie-breakers are played at 7 games all.
Play commences at 1.00pm and concludes around 4.00pm - can commence earlier if both captains agree.
Clubs that have mid-week ladies on Thursday morning often have a delayed start.
There are two seasons per calendar year:Autumn commencing on the first Thursday of February and Spring commencing on the first Thursday of August. All Grand Finals are currently played at North Ringwood Tennis Club
Teams are graded into 6 team sections (play 15 home and away matches, with 2 finals), or 8 team sections (play 14 home and away matches, with 3 finals) in a season. Teams finishing first and second in an 8 team section have a double chance if they lose the Sectond Semi-Final.
The size of each section is determined by the Grading Panel to minimise Byes and produce the closest competition.
We currently have 5 Sections and in the top section includes players who have represented Victoria and Australia in their respective age groups. Promotions can occur when the lower graded team have younger players or have an exceptional season - sometimes older teams stay in the same grade unless they win consecutive flags.
In the lower sections we have many players in their 70's and 80's keeping themselves fit and healthy in a caring environment.
Often you can join existing clubs or teams in the competition by watching teams and gauging what section would be appropriate for your ability and age. Contact can be made by ringing the Record Secretary to check what teams require players.
Tennis courts must be user firendly, generally en-tous-cas or artificial carpet based courts, no plexi-pave or plexi-cushion courts.
