Code of Conduct

To ensure we remain a family friendly organisation, offering both tennis and badminton, we expect that members and visitors will comply with the following Code of Conduct.

The purpose of our Code of Conduct  is to acknowledge the obligations of members which apply as a matter of common courtesy and because MYSC is now affiliated with both Tennis Victoria and Badminton Victoria, which have codes of conduct applying respectively to tennis and badminton.  These codes establish obligations and complaints procedures that apply to members, guests and visitors (including hirers of the tennis courts) with regard to expected courtesy and behaviour.  Details are available at https://www.badmintonvic.com.au/state-team-resources and https://www.tennis.com.au/fnqjds/player-code-of-conduct

Much of the content of these codes relates to competition play and so does not directly concern MYSC.  Our objective as a club is to encourage reasonably competitive social play that is safe and enjoyable and to encourage new members, families and community participation by persons of all ages and abilities to enjoy our sports and develop their skills to the best of their ability.  In social play, we change partners regularly and play with whoever we are assigned to play with.  We are all volunteers, and encourage everyone to pitch in, especially with setting up and packing up our gear in the badminton hall, sweeping if necessary for safe play and making it safe for other users after we leave.

Any misconduct adversely affects our club and its reputation in the town and with visitors who use our facilities, and our reputation as affiliates of Tennis Victoria and Badminton Victoria.  Persons breaching applicable codes can be subjected to sanctions by those bodies which could affect the rights they enjoy as affiliated members, and we enjoy as a club.

MYSC has adopted ‘Child Safe’ codes of conduct in connection with programs for children in collaboration with Mallacoota P-12 College, to ensure that children participating in our activities feel happy, safe, respected and encouraged to participate and develop their skills.

The MYSC Code of Conduct requires that members, guests and visitors should extend to others the same courtesy, respect and consideration for individual feelings, personal safety and property that we expect to receive ourselves.  This is common courtesy, and to be clear, the following kinds of conduct are not permitted in this or any affiliated clubs:

  • Any action towards an individual or group that denigrates them or creates a hostile or intimidatory environment, e.g. bad language or physically aggressive play;
  • Any action that discriminates against persons on the grounds of gender, age, ethnic origin or religion, or fails to treat persons equally with respect and dignity;
  • Any action on or off court including e.g. on social media that breaches the code or reflects adversely on MYSC or its affiliated organisations.

Members are encouraged to self-monitor and in moderation call out bad behaviour by others.  If necessary, breaches will be dealt with by the Committee, initially by a warning but in serious or repeated cases the Committee may suspend membership privileges or take other action in accordance with the procedures set out in the governing rules of the club.  Any complaints made to affiliated organisations will be dealt with by them in accordance with their procedures.
