About Wednesday Night Social Tennis
I’m Johnny your local Wednesday Night Social Tennis co-ordinator.
How about a little history to kick things off?
Wednesday night social tennis has been going on for at least 36 years. I’m the third co-ordinator in that time since It started originally around the mid 1980’s on actually a Friday night. However, back in those days, Friday night shopping was important, so numbers were steady but not great. Friday night social lasted around 3 years before becoming a Wednesday night fixture in the late 1980’s.
I joined the Weston Creek Tennis Club in 1993. I was originally a grade one table tennis player with no tennis training or experience whatsoever. However, I picked up the larger racquet successfully and got hooked on the game instantly. After a few years, I ended up assisting the then Wednesday night tennis social co-ordinator, as his side kick, before taking over the role permanently in 2002. Wednesday night social is just that, it’s all about tennis and the social interaction between everyone. Wednesday night social tennis is certainly unique, and its longevity speaks for itself.
Tennis starts at 7.00pm and you guessed it, it’s on every Wednesday night when we are not in lockdown. We finish around 10pm, but everyone is welcome to start later and finish earlier if they like. It’s your choice. We usually play doubles with 8 games a set and mix it up, so the social competition is as even as possible. There are some groups of four that just require a court to play amongst themselves and that is also fine. The fees are very fair and are required to cover the cost of lighting and the balls. Members pay $5 for the night and non-members pay $10.
Wednesday Night Social Tennis is open to everyone of all ages and levels. However, it is expected that social players have some grasp of the game so that they can participate and enjoy themselves. Please note that Weston Creek has a high level of tennis coaching available. I genuinely feel, it’s the best in Canberra. If you are a beginner wanting to play this great game, a combination of the excellent tennis coaching that is available coupled with Wednesday Night Social will certainly lift your game and enjoyment.
