History

Sport has been played in Stratford since the second half of the18th century. Football, cricket and tennis all have their origins in this period.
In these days tennis clubs were part of the local churches i.e Holy Trinity, Presbyterian Church etc and this continued until 1953.

In 1953 the Stratford Sporting Centre Committee has completed plans for the new proposed sporting precinct that would consists of 6 bowling rinks and 3 tennis courts. The Committee was chaired by Avon Shire Councillor E J Lee and raised funds by issuing bonds which financed the purchase of land (current Stratford bowling club, corner Tyers’s and Princess Highway) . The site was the former Stratford saleyards. Buildings were acquired (moved) from the former Stratford Racecourse.
Much of the work was completed by the community and was the forerunner to the fantastic sporting facilities Stratford now enjoy

The inaugural meeting of the Stratford Tennis Club was held on 31st August 1953 with Iván Mc Nally (President) and Laurie Hall elected as Secretary/Treasurer.
The Tennis Club and Bowling club co-existed for many years on the site. It was a mixture of the generations with the older Bowlers and the younger tennis players. There were rules such as the tennis club could not use eh kitchen until the bowlers had gone out on the greens to play and tennis club plyers were often delegated the out building to socialise. Many tennis players vowed to never play bowls when they got older. In reality the tennis club has been a fertile recruiting ground for new bowler. Many of those who vowed never to play bowls are now valued members of the bowls club

The bowling club rooms were subsequently upgraded with the current Stratford Club rooms being built. The tennis courts lagged behind and in the mid-1980s land was accessed at Llowalong for a multi-purpose sporting complex was built to accommodate 6 tennis courts, oval for football and cricket. This complex was called Pine Lodge Reserve and is the current home of the Stratford Tennis Club.  The facility was a fantastic well-designed facility set on land on the outskirts of Stratford. Another 2 courts were added due to large junior and senior numbers. During the 1990s the clubs membership was about 80 to 90 members with 8 junior sides and 4 senior sides and offered night tennis 4 nights a week.

In 2005 the club awarded Dieter Figas and June Richardson life membership for their valued contributions to the tennis club over more than 30 years. Dieter was the driving force behind the design and development of Pine Lodge and June was a tireless volunteer who done what had to be done. For many years she took beginners for training on Saturday mornings.
In 2020 4 tennis courts were reconstructed and new flood lighting were installed which was funded by the Wellington Shire, Victorian Government and contribution from the Stratford Tennis Club.
