Working With Children Check (WWCC) Policy

As you may be aware, there are many procedures and policies being implemented throughout various junior sporting clubs in relation to Safeguarding Children.

These are the guidelines from Tennis Victoria that our committee have used to determine who needs a WWCC at SJCTC:

  1. Who needs a Working With Children Check (WWCC)?  The best way to determine the legal obligations are to use the tool on the Working with Children Website: http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home/about+the+check/who+needs+a+check/
  2. Do committee members that have no interaction with children need a WWCC? Tennis Victoria encourages all Committee members to have a WWCC, to show the commitment of the club’s leadership to this topic.
  3. What about committee members that have no contact with children but are communicating with juniors via newsletters, social media, emails, etc? Such committee members require a WWCC (“Direct contact is face-to-face, physical, written, oral or electronic contact.”)
  4. Are there any rules around Team Managers that are parents? If they are not there physically, would they need a WWCC? If the role has direct contact with children, then unless an exemption applies (e.g. parent of a child who usually participates) then they would need a WWCC. If the role doesn’t have any direct contact, then no WWCC is required.
  5. What age do coaches need to have WWCC? To be a Tennis Australia Coach Member (no matter what your qualifications) from 16 years old they must have a National Police Certificate and from 18 years old they must have a WWCC.

It is our SJCTC Committee decision that any person who fills one of the following roles within our tennis club must hold a valid WWCC:

  • All Executive and General Committee Members
  • Junior Co-ordinators
  • Junior Team Managers
  • Junior Home Supervisors
  • Coaches

If you are in one of these roles or you aim to fulfil one of these roles ie committee or assisting your child’s team manager in their absence, please update or apply for your WWCC. As a volunteer, there is no charge in applying for your WWCC.
