My MPTA story - Naomi Mizzeni

1. Where did you grow up and what are some of your earliest memories playing tennis?

I grew up in Benalla and didn’t play tennis as a kid. I always played basketball and netball and I remember one Christmas I got a tennis racquet (which was not on my list!!) and mum enrolled me in a tennis clinic over the summer. I wasn’t happy because growing up in Benalla (being very hot), I only wanted to go to the pool with my friends in summer.

2. When did you first play tennis at the Association? And who got you involved?

Gareth’s (my husband) family had always been involved in the Association and everyone from around here talked about how they grew up playing tennis, I thought I should bring out my wooden tennis racquet that I had got for that Christmas and try playing tennis. My group of friends were all having babies and were not working on Wednesdays. I liked organising things and people so I think I was the one that suggested we put a team into the mid-week ladies tennis competition. That would have been when Daniel (my son) was a baby so 2004.

3. Describe yourself as a tennis player?

I’ve never had any coaching so I’m very Random!!! 😂 you never know what you’re going to get!

4. What are some of your highlights across your playing days?

We started off in D grade winning the grand finals each year and moved up till we were up in the top section. Our team changed along the way and I loved playing with all my friends and it was so good in the early days with all the kids coming along - they loved it.

5. Who are some of the best players you’ve shared a court with over the years?

All the players I have been lucky to have had on my team have carried me along with them in moving up the grades. They have all been great players and lovely friends and they know who they are…. but the best ladies I have played against are probably the Tracey’s - Amarant and Beaston. So consistent and beautiful players

6. What did you enjoy most about playing on the grass courts?

Nothing better than playing on our beautiful grass courts - we are very lucky at MTPA to have a great dedicated greenskeeper!!!!

7. Your family has also had an involvement in tennis at Mt Prospect, what are some of your favourite family memories with tennis?

Yes all the Mizzenis have had a huge involvement with the Association. My boys played junior tennis. I unfortunately never got to play with or against Helen (my Mother-in-law), which was a shame but recently got to play with Riley in the Twilight tournament which I loved. We as a family always loved the kids and parents nights.

8. How did you find the social aspect of the Association over the years?

The Association committee is very good and there has always been good social functions. When Casey set up the social tennis on a Tues night that was well received and a lot of fun. Twilight tennis is a great social tournament and very well run with the dinners and drinks provided afterwards - the committee do a fabulous job that night as well.

9. What do you think draws people to playing tennis at the Association?

How well it is run, the grass courts and the people involved!

10. What advice do you have for anyone wanting to get involved with the Association in a voluntary capacity?

I was on the committee for years and as I have said, the orgainisers are so welcoming and efficient and fun. It is such a great way to be a part of your community - definitely volunteer!!!
