Longford Tennis Club - History

The Club has been in existence since 1900. The land was donated by the Harrison family and was called the Longford Lawn Tennis Club. It catered for men whilst the woman had a separate Club, and the two amalgamated in 1950. An interesting fact found in the minutes noted that the women were able to play after they had served afternoon tea to the men. The oldest minute book we have is 1935.

The clubhouse is the original building although improvements have been made over the years. In 2021, a grant was received and this enabled the kitchen to be renovated by club members.

Court surfaces have changed over the years from lawn to bitumen, then to clay, and finally, in 1991, to Synpave which is a synthetic hard court. Lights were erected in 2003.

Every year the club has had a range of very enjoyable tournaments. Club Members participate in a Midweek pennant in Summer, a Social day in Winter and Evening Roster on Tuesdays.

The Longford Tennis Club is not a council funded entity. It is run by a committee and funded by membership subscriptions, fundraising and any grants received.
