The forecasted heavy rain stayed away on Sunday and the players were treated to warm and humid conditions for the 2022 edition of the Club Championships. With just under 50 entries including a strong showing from the Junior members, competition was close and played in terrific family spirit.
Matt Pocklington once again took out the Open Mens Singles event with a 6-2 win over Luke Marshman. In the Open Womens Singles Irene van Tiggelen claimed her first championship title with a 6-5 win over her daughter Ella Skelton in the deciding rubber.
Both Matt and Irene repeated their winning singles performances in the doubles. In the Open Mens Doubles Matt and Pat Biro defeated Luke Marshman and Paul Ramsbottom 6-4 in a match that could have gone either way. In the Opens Womens Doubles Irene and Renae Littlejohn were the winners over juniors Ella Skelton and Sophie Kreutzberger 6-4 in an entertaining match. And in the final event the Open Mixed Doubles Matt Pocklington and Ella Skelton came out on top points over runners up Warren and Renae Littlejohn.
In the Junior Singles Max Sheahan won his first title with a convincing win over Zac Langstaff. He backed it up with a win in the Junior Doubles, partnering with Sophie Kreutzberger to defeat Zac Langstaff and Archie Fixter in a very close 7-6 final. It was terrific to see all the juniors in the crowd supporting this final and entertaining match.
The Club was excited to run 2 extra junior grade events for our newer and younger players, with most playing in their first tournament – the B Grade Junior Singles won by Ned Sheahan, with Archer Commadeur coming in runner-up followed by Zac Evans in third. And lastly the C Grade Junior Singles won by Declan Russell, runner-up Olly Ramsbottom and Jarrah Commadeur and Taeden Giliam coming in third and fourth.
