Cath and Ian Collins perpetual trophy

Each year, KPTC award the Cath and Ian Collins trophy (Ian was the club’s first president).
Awarded to the most improved junior girl and boy. The coaches meet to discuss potential
recipients, often quite vigorously.
I will say this about both of this year’s recipients - their behavior on court is excellent. I
watch a bit, and it’s impossible for know whether they’re winning, losing or evenly matched. No
change in their behaviour.

Cath Collins

We were unanimous… Eugenie Zhou
The first I saw her was in a large orange ball group lesson. She was very little
and very young. I watched her hit 1 forehand and 1 backhand…and thought
OMG that’s the most talented girl I’ve ever seen.
A couple of seasons later she started playing green ball competition.
Last year she was selected into Super 10’s, which is a mixture of coaching and
play (60 Victorian girls are chosen, the best 30 play matches…She played).
Last season she played in Girls 2 and this season she’s playing in Girls 1 MDJTA.
The best part of all of this in my opinion is that she doesn’t play much tennis (a
shared private lesson and one match per week). She also plays another sport.

At the moment, KPTC has possibly 10 teenaged boys who are either starting to, or have already transitioned from junior to adult competition. The coaches meeting was vigorous… U-Zin Goh.
His current coach wrote this about him:
Once just known as quiet, he is fast becoming the quiet achiever. At home on the
baseline, but adding more strings to his bow with an emerging net game. Presently
playing in the Saturday Section 1 Boys team at number 3 at the age of 15. He is also
breaking strings at the rate of every 8 weeks much to the dismay of his stringer and
coach. He is the U to the Z to the I and the N, it's U-Zin!
