History
Glenlea was founded by Frank Gibson in 1915 and was originally known as Church of Christ Tennis Club.
The name of the club was changed to “GLENLEA TENNIS CLUB” in 1937.
This name was chosen because the club was on the leaward side of Glenelg. It was decided the colours of the club be green and white.
The first Annual General Meeting was held in the schoolroom of the Church of Christ. All committee meetings were then held in the private home of a member.
Subsequent AGMs were held in the Holdfast Clubrooms, Williams Avenue, Glenelg including the last AGM prior to leaving Brighton Road and moving to Ferguson Street, Camden Park in 1970.
Frank Gibson was president of Glenlea in 1937, a position he held until 1953. He was also president of Glenelg District Association from 1931-1951, when he became a life member of both clubs. He was the first person to hold both positions.
A new 5-year lease for the courts was drawn up on the understanding that the club pay only two pounds per court instead of six pounds. A further proviso was that the Club take over the upkeep of the courts and surrounds and spend forty pounds.
2015 marked the 100 year anniverisory of Glenlea Tennis Club.
