2. Book-a-Court Starts this Sunday: thanks to Steve Cramond and Ron Slamowicz
To help our Club grow, members and casual users will be able to easily come to our courts to play tennis – members for free and visitors for a fee that they’ll pay online when booking a court. Our Club will also easily record how and when our courts are being used, which will mainly now be done through ‘Book a Court’. Most of the time, our Committee will no longer have to come to the courts to open up and collect money for visitors, use of lights etc.
Our Book-a-Court Guide for Members has been emailed to GHTC members.
If you haven’t already done so, please set up an account in our “Club Spark” system and remember your Password so you can book and access a court if you want to play outside organised social or competition times.
Fees for booking a court at Glen Huntly per court per hour are:
| Members | Public |
Off-Peak M-F to 4pm | $0 | $20 |
Peak M-F from 4pm; plus weekends | $0 | $30 |
Peak Court Booking + Lights on | $10 (for lights) | $30 (lights in court fee) |
Member books: includes visitor(s) | $10 for visitor(s) |
|
Social Tues night (from July) | $5 player for night | $10 player for night |
3. Celebration: Free Social BBQ and Tennis 11.30am Sunday 6 June
We’ll celebrate all our recent new members, our new fences, Book-a-Court, new windbreaks (to be installed on the fences shortly) and new clubhouse carpet (to be installed shortly).
4. Junior Competition Teams in Finals this Weekend
Our seven junior teams have all done very well completing the home and away matches last weekend. All our teams had fun and played with respect for the other players. The standards of many matches I have seen recently were really outstanding
– we thank our players, parents and Club Coach Phil Mattei for contributing to the fine skills and manners that our players are showing. Good luck to everyone.
Four of our junior teams will play finals starting Saturday 29 May and Sunday 6 June. Please go along to watch and support them at:
8.30 am Saturday Boys 7 v Highett at Maccabi
8.30 am Saturday Boys 8 vs St Joan of Arc at Beaumaris LTC
8.30 am Saturday Girls 6 vs BLTC at Le Page Sunday Mixed 15 on 6 June – TBC

7. Adult Competition
The Saturday afternoon competition runs through to late August and we have teams in Mixed Rubbers (Sections 3 and 6) and in the Open Singles/Doubles.
8. Tuesday Night Tennis
We’re pleased that the Bayside Association (BRTA) has reorganised Tuesday night competition into three sections with more teams. This will mean a wider range and more players can have a go.
Four players play each week, pairing with each of their team in three sets of doubles per player. We’ll fit in nicely to play (mid-July to Oct) each Tuesday night (7-9.30pm).
We want to include about 8 players in our team - please let Graham (0400 598 705) know if you’re interested to play regularly or occasionally.
9. What our Club most wants to achieve in the rest of 2021:
- Increase members by 29+ from now (25 May) to end December (including 25+ more females and 38+ more juniors)
- Resurface our courts with TigerTurf Elite artificial grass and mitigate winds
- Increase participation with three more competition teams, more social tennis, adult and junior club championships, two Open Days, special sessions for juniors from Glen Eira College and other schools, plus at least three social tennis BBQ’s and activities of interest.
Our Committee is looking for some volunteers to assist with any one of:
*Tuesday night tennis *Juniors *Events *Promotion to schools
If you can help, please email graham.ihlein@optusnet.com.au or ring Graham on 0400 598 705.
10. Other News
Our Club is eager to help all juniors, families and adults who need assistance to participate in tennis. If you need help, our Club will assist - email or ring Graham on graham.ihlein@optusnet.com.au or 0400 598 705.
The Bayside Regional Tennis Association (BRTA) last week held their AGM by zoom – and remarkably included the President of Tennis Victoria and a Board Member of Tennis Australia in the meeting. It was clear that BRTA, Tennis Victoria and Tennis Australia are switched on and they’re listening to the grass roots. It was also clear how determined are the Victorian Government and the tennis associations to keep the Australian Open in Melbourne. It was pointed out that solid detailed studies have shown that the Australian Open provides
$400 million in stimulus to our Victorian economy, and that 89% of attendance in a normal year is from Australians – so it’s possible to get a strong Open in Melbourne early next year with big benefits for our tennis and our economy.
Sign into the QR Code whenever you come to our courts - from this Friday venues and facilities must use the Victorian Government QR Service. It’s easy:
- Download the Service Victoria app (on App Store or Google Play), then click on the App and click “Contact Tracing Check-in”
- point your phone at our QR Code at the clubhouse or courts
- then first time only type your name etc and Save
- and then click complete and it will give you a tick.
