Junior Teams - Saturday or Sunday Mornings
Glen Huntly Tennis Club welcomes early to experienced players (under the age of 18 years) to play in our existing Junior teams or, if there are numbers, we can create an entirely new team.
Seasons are Feb-June and July-December [excluding school holidays and public holiday weekends]. Matches start between 8.00 and 10.00am and run for around 2 hours.
Glen Huntly Tennis Club has teams registered at various levels in both the Moorabbin & District Junior Tennis (run Saturday mornings) and Bayside Regional Tennis Association (run Sunday mornings).
To join and play in these teams, there are a few steps to follow:
- All competition players, without exception, MUST be members of the club.
- Once your membership has been approved, please contact our club coach Phil Mattei for an introductory session to assess player level and discuss the best team option(s).
Frequently asked questions:
- Am I ready to play in a team? If you can serve at a 50% success rate (half your serves go in) and received and return the ball, you're ready! Matches will quickly improve your game.
- Do I need to know the rules and scoring system? No, but it helps. Initially the scoring system may seem strange, but your teammates will help, and it will soon become familiar. You'll also learn tennis "manners" and on-court behaviour.
- Do I need my own tennis racquet? Yes
- What must I wear?: Acceptable shorts and shirts for the boys and skirts/shorts/dresses for the girls. Correct shoes must be worn especially (but not limited to on en-tout-cas courts). Clubs can request to view the shoes and if they are not the correct type, can refuse to let players on the courts. If in doubt, please ask your coach or team manager as to what they consider correct tennis attire.
- How many players in a Team? Teams are normally 4-6+ players, allowing individuals to take turns in playing each week. Time away for school camps and other obligations can be rostered off.
- How many players participate each match? 4-6 players.
- How many games do you play each match? One set of singles and one set of doubles. Moorabbin & District Junior Tennis: Boys Sections 1 – 10 inclusive and Girls Sections 1 – 5 inclusive, play a 12-point tie break at 6 all if required in any set. All other sections play a straight six game set, i.e., first to 6 games. Bayside Regional Tennis - Juniors: Matches shall consist of 6-game sets in which a tie-break shall be played if the score reaches 6-games-all.
- Does the Team need to practice? Teams are welcome to practice at any time but it's not essential. In addition, the Club's Sunday afternoon organized Social Tennis is a fun playing opportunity for adults and juniors and allows for some informal coaching.
- Where do the Teams play? Teams play half their matches at the Glen Huntly Tennis Club courts and half away at the other bayside clubs. Transport can be organized if needed.
Child Safety: The safety of all our junior members is of utmost importance to the club. All Junior teams have a team manager who has undergone a Working with Children Check and has a current Working with Children Certificate. Any concerns or questions re: child safety can be directed to the clubs Child Safety Officer: Rosy Renwick: rosy.renwick@gmail.com
