Glen Huntly Tennis Club - Past, Present and Future
Members of Glen Huntly Tennis Club have fun playing tennis – we enjoy playing the game, exercise, friendship and fun. And Glen Huntly Tennis Club is a community tennis club. We accept and welcome our social responsibilities to foster tennis and our local community. Growing our membership and upgrading our courts are the key priorities for our future.
The Club was formed in 1937 with two courts and a very small clubhouse. Glen Huntly was then at the edge of Melbourne’s suburban growth. The Tennis Club was in the middle of vacant Crown Land. In the 1950s two additional courts were added and the clubhouse was substantially expanded. The Club is now adjacent to the football/cricket oval in Glen Huntly Park and backs on to the Caulfield Racecourse's south-western aspect.
By the early 1990s club membership numbers were declining and the remaining players were aging. Courts and facilities were aging too, although lights for the courts were installed in the 1990s. The Club then changed direction and membership surged (with about 30% being juniors). By 2010 the club had many new junior members. Club members included people originating from over fifteen different countries, with many from the countries of East, South East and South Asia. The club continues now to attract a diverse membership.
The Club has an active Committee, which attempts to cover nearly all the necessary tasks as volunteers. The club's website, hosted on ClubSpark, Tennis Australia's preferred platform, is supplemented by its Facebook page and email newsletters to members.
The Club has several junior and adult competition teams; there is organised social tennis four days a week, and coaching is provided nearly every day by our contracted Coach, Phil Mattei.
