1B. CLUB COURTESY & COURT ETIQUETTE
Of all sports, tennis is famous for its etiquette.
While adhering to many rules about how to behave on a tennis court might sound old-school and old-fashioned, tennis etiquette actually makes the sport more enjoyable.
Tennis etiquette won't give you a bigger serve however it will make you more enjoyable to share the court with.
GENERAL
If nets are not up or there is a NO PLAY sign on the court, then the court is being rested for a particular reason.
Do not play on wet courts. This will not only damage the surface, which may take weeks to repair, but is dangerous if you slip over!
Please avoid walking behind a court when a point is in play.
Wait until the point is over and then cross as fast as possible.
PLAY
Balls on your side of the net are your responsibility to pick up and return directly to the server, under the net if possible and when the server is ready. Avoid hitting the balls to the back of the court for the server to retrieve.
The receiver should not return the first serve unless the call was so close that you had no option but to hit the ball.
When sending balls back to a neighbouring court send over to the back of the court, and not while play is in progress.
Tennis balls are not soccer balls and should never be kicked in the returning process.
The server should call the current game score clearly before each serve.
Make line calls clearly and promptly and give your opponent the benefit of the doubt if you're unsure. Remember tennis karma is a powerful force!
Fairly important; please discuss this with your children - especially part relating to "walking behind courts whilst points are being played"!
