Cawongla District Tennis and Recreation Club

Cawongla District Tennis & Recreation Club has been part of the rural sporting and social life of this district for over a hundred years. The land was donated by the farm adjoining the club for management by a community trust for the community’s benefit. Originally there was a community hall where the clubhouse now stands as well as 2 claycourts. The hall unfortunately burnt down in the 1980s and the decision was made not to rebuild. Money from the insurance for the hall was used to bitumenise the courts. The courts have been used variously over the years with even monthly discos run under the lights for teenagers.

In its beautiful rural setting on the edge of the Cawongla village, the simple clubhouse looks across the single court to the treed paddocks and the hills beyond. In 2005, with dwindling interest and badly deteriorating court surface and fencing, the decision was made to convert to a single standard size court with an artificial grass surface. The improved surface and court with new fencing did reinvigorate the club. The artificial grass surface was renewed in 2017.

This club is run and maintained by committed community members. In 2021, solar panels were installed on the clubhouse and in 2023, we won a grant that has enabled us to install excellent lighting to enable evening play, avoiding both the heat and sun exposure of daytime play.  

 Affiliated with Tennis NSW, all who play or attend our courts are fully covered by sports insurance.

At the moment there is weekly social tennis on Saturdays with the court available for private hire the rest of the week.
