History

A meeting was held at the Moriac State School on November 15th, 1928 to form the Moriac Tennis Club. The Club then made an application to the Moriac School Committee for the use of the school court, until then they used the court of Mr. Fred Deppeler.

As Early as 1947 the club was making enquiries regarding the possibility of building public courts. As the club grew, the court of Mr. & Mrs. Phil Russell was used as well as the school court.

In 1965 a sub committee was set up to acquire land to build public courts. The Moriac Sports Centre Committee was set up to raise money, and the Committee was very happy to accept the generous offer of Mr. & Mrs. Keith Newling of land to build tennis courts. The courts were started in 1968

Four asphalt courts and pavilion were opened on Easter Saturday 1970 by Mr. & Mrs Newling the donors of the land, Mr. & Mrs A Purnell the Shire President and Mr. & Mrs Des Stokes the Coast Tennis Association President. To mark the opening a tournament was held with 78 players taking part.

In the early 1970’s many young girls in the district were playing netball together in a competition in Geelong.  A netball court was needed to practice on, so with money raised by the community and a grant from the Barrabool Shire a court was put down near the tennis courts. It was placed at Moriac because it was felt it could be converted into another tennis court if the interest in netball wavered. The Tennis Club with help from the Shire established a small playground for the use of the community and people playing tennis.

In the 1980’s the Barrabool Shire decided to sell off the tennis court site with monies put towards the establishment of the Moriac Community Centre at “Newling Park” Hendy Main Road with 4 new tennis courts. The project was achieved with the input of Federal, State and Local Government.

The Tennis Club held a successful tournament to celebrate the opening of the Community Centre and tennis courts On Sunday, August 1st 1993.
