History

The Latrobe Tennis club has a profound history within the township of Latrobe.  The tennis club was originally founded in 1910 at the original courts which were located at 20 Hamilton Street (across the road from St. Lukes Anglican Church) before being moved to the current site of the Picton Grange Tennis Courts (corner of Gilbert and Noone Street) in 1994.

Between 1910 and 1965 the club won many regional premierships, making it one of the premier clubs in the region, with one young member winning the U/21 Tasmanian Titles in 1925 and 1926.  Since then, and more recently, the club has entered teams in the North-West Tennis League, Ladies Mid-week Pennant Competition

2011 saw the installation of lights for the three courts, which enabled the club to roster twilight and night games, further increasing the utilisation of the courts.

In 2012 the club closed after 100 years, but re-opening again shortly on 1 August 2015.  Since then, the club has grown to a player base of 75 players (40 males and 30 females) ranging from juniors, social and competitive players.

Since reopening the club has achieved success with the Club having teams in the following competitions:

  • 2019 Division 2 Winners (Undefeated) - Mid-Week Ladies Pennant Summer Roster.
  • 2019 Division 1 - Mid-Week Ladies Pennant Winter Roster.
  • 2019 A Reserve – North-West Tennis League 2019.
  • 2019 Two Division B Teams - North-West Tennis League 2019, with one team making the semi-finals.
  • Australian Masters Games 2019, Adelaide – Seven players represented the Club and brought home 11 medals.
  • 2020 Division 2 - Mid-Week Ladies Pennant Winter Roster.
  • 2020 Two A Reserve Teams – North-West Tennis League; and,
  • 2020 Division B Team - North-West Tennis League.

Based on the success of Australian Masters Games in Adelaide, it is expected the Club will be represented in 2021 Australian Masters Games in Perth.
