Drought breaking P2 premiership for Alcheringa
Sun, 10 Sep 2023 00:00
A very nervous group of Alcheringa Allstars met at the Aero Oval courts at 12 noon (yes 12 noon for a warm-up) on Saturday 9th September 2023.
Reece (second left above, posing on tippy toes) was particularly nervous, with a history making season within his grasp (pool night, bowling night, and now possible premiership legend).
After strategically positioning each player into their best spot, the sets began in perfect fashion with Dave (the orchid) and Reece confidently defeating their more fancied opponents 8-3. Next door Vhilla and Natasha (looking splendid in her new club shirt) knocked off their opponents 8-2. Bloody beauty, 2-0.
Riley and Reece then came from behind to force a tie-breaker, and then really whipped into gear to confidently win this tie-breaker 8-1. At the same time Sam joined Vhilla, who was having a great day, would later bleed for the team, and they got the job done. All of a sudden we were 4-0 up against the minor premiers who had only lost a few games all season.
One more set needed to win the premiership!
Dave and Riley combined but went down in a tight set 6-8.
Score 4-1.
Sam and Natasha then combined to win 8-4, meaning all ladies sets were won, the first time this has occurred all season, and the premiership goes to Alcheringa!! YOU BLOODY BEAUTY. 5-1
With the premiership won, the mixed doubles were exactly that - mixed. Three losses, one unfortunately in a tie breaker. A few players were exhausted from their earlier effort, and The Orchid had returned (calf, conditions, humidity), but nothing can take away the great performance from all. Winning really is much more fun. Not bad for a team who were originally looking to play P3 at the start of the season.
Final scores Alcheringa 5 (62) def Sacred Heart Starters 4 (54)
Thanks to all who came down to support throughout the day, and attend the presentation celebrations that night.
