President's Message
Welcome to the Winter edition of our Newsletter. I hope the cold weather is not preventing you all from getting out on the court and enjoying your tennis.
Even though the ACT Government has released revised Public Health Directives, we are very fortunate that we can keep our club open and you and your guests can still enjoy your tennis and the club’s facilities without any major restrictions. The only change is that face masks must be worn when in the clubhouse.
April and May were particularly busy months with a large number of our members renewing their membership for a further 12 months. A great job was done by Brian Chauncey and Clair Dupont to update the members’ records using our membership computer system which is far from “user friendly”. We were very pleased that most of our members did renew for a further 12 months and consequently our overall membership numbers remain over 300.
We have just been informed that we have been successful with our application for the Commonwealth Government’s Stronger Communities Programme Round 6 Grant. The grant provides the club with $3,300 for the purchase and installation of a defibrillator and cabinet. The defibrillator will be installed at a convenient location in the clubhouse and this initiative clearly reinforces the club’s commitment to its “duty of care” by protecting those playing at the club, as well as those volunteers working and assisting around the club.
We have also been fortunate in having Tennis ACT generously offering to enhance our hitting wall by arranging to have the wall painted at no cost to the club. A photo of how the wall is expected to look once the artwork has been completed is included in this Newsletter. The Committee has accepted Tennis ACT’s offer and we are now waiting for a convenient time for the work to be undertaken.
Our Treasurer, Geoff Kotz, has completed our financial statements for 2020/21 (1 April – 30 March) and has recently prepared a budget for 2021/22. It is pleasing to note that our finances have improved over the past 12 months due to increases in revenue from membership and casual bookings. Although there has not been a significant increase in membership numbers in the last 12 months, our casual court booking numbers and revenue have increased considerably. As a result, it is expected that the club will be able to pay off 50% of its current bank loan. The loan was taken out to fund the replacement of courts 5 – 8 in 2019. This is a very pleasing achievement and a big thank you to Geoff for all the work that was required to complete this very important task.
Finally, just another reminder to please follow our COVID safety arrangements so that we can all continue to enjoy tennis at our wonderful club. Wear a face mask in the club house, check in when entering the club using the QR signage, stay 1.5 metres apart, and wash your hands. These simple steps will keep us all safe and hopefully keep our club open.
