Thomastown Tennis Club comprises of two amalgamated local clubs, St Luke's Tennis Club and Thomastown Tennis Club.
St Luke's Tennis Club was founded in 1963 by the local church to support the parish members becoming active. The new teams formed, initially competed on the school grounds of St Luke's church and later at St Monica's school in Epping. The club lobbied with local council in the 70's to build a new fit for purpose club house on Dalton Road, Lalor with 4 courts (2 En-tout-cas & 2 asphalt courts). The asphalt courts were later changed to Plexipave.
Thomastown Tennis Club was founded in 1964 by local residents led by Harry Penrice with the assistance of local council member Vic Michael. The club was originally located in the Alexander Avenue reserve on the corner of Boronia Street & Alexander Avenue, Thomastown with 2 courts (both asphalt). Later due to demand, 3 more courts were added to the venue and all the surfaces changed to Plexipave.
To maintain the existence of the Thomastown tennis club and its history, a decision was made to amalgamate in 1994 with St Luke's tennis club. We were renamed to St Luke’s Thomastown Tennis Club and Thomastown members and memorabilia moved to the Dalton Road location.
In the late 1990's, for our members to participate in night competition, there was a need for court lights. Unfortunately, due to the residential surrounds, the club was unable to obtain permission for lights at our Dalton Road location.
On the 5th of December 1999, the conception of our new and current facility at the Thomastown East Reserve was established and we have not looked back. We boast 6 courts (all with lights) and a modern club house.
In May 2021, a special resolution was put forward to Club members by the Committee to amend our club’s name from St Luke’s Thomastown Tennis Club to Thomastown Tennis Club to align with our current location and increase our appeal as a welcoming and inclusive sporting club for our local community.
