1. Who is in my team and what next?
You and your team will be sent the team list and contact information. You should get in touch with your team to work out how you would like to communicate week to week (What's App, email etc ) and find out availability for the season. The sooner you know of absences the better. Find the draw online detailing all matches, venues and times. All parents should be able to find this online, but you can assist. Read it carefully = times can vary week to week. Arrive at courts about 15 minutes before play to warm up. Matches should start at 08:30 or 11:00
The RHTC Junior coordinator will set up a Whatsapp group for all managers for efficient communication between the club and teams.
2. What about balls and score sheets?
You will be provided with enough balls for the season. When you are the home team, provide 4 NEW balls for the match. Your players can take turns to keep the balls when used. Home team should provide a score sheet (print some out (below) for the season). Score sheet should be retained for the season, and if you are the away team, its a good idea to take a photo of the score sheet. You will need to verify the results online.
3. How do I enter scores online?
Tennis ACT Junior coordinator (Michael Gruen) will help set you up online to enter the scores via your Match Centre account. Scores should be entered by the home team ASAP but within 48 hours of play, and verified by the away team. For any questions about Match Centre please contact Michael.

4. What if I need a spare player?
Start as early as possible to line up reserve players when needed. Start with other Red Hill managers in your division (in case they have a spare) then ask Matt. Players from lower divisions can fill in for you, but not from higher divisions.
If you and Matt cannot find a player and you only have 2 players, you can either forfeit the match (not more than one hour before play is scheduled) or, if your team wants, take 2 players to the match and play what you can. Advise the opposition beforehand if this is the case. You will forfeit the 3 unplayed matches, but it can be better than not playing at all. This is optional and you may decide to forfeit the match instead.
5. As manager, do I have to be at every match?
No! Your core responsibility is making sure the team is ready to play, and entering the scores online. ONE parent minimum should be at the match at all times, but this doesn't have to be you. Work this out with your other team parents. Other parents can help supervise, with transport etc.
6. I have a 4 person team - how does that work?
3 players play each week, so with a 4 person team you will need to coordinate. Find out availability for the season, then draw up a rough roster - each player will need to sit out a few matches. This usually works out, and they can fill in for other teams as needed and if eligible.
7. How do I know if we are the HOME team?
You are listed on the LEFT hand side of the draw, and/or are playing at Red Hill. Sometimes you are the home team even though you are playing at Yarralumla or Barton etc. This is because we don't have court space to host all our home games. Home teams provide the balls, score sheet and decide about play if rain is forecast.
8. What if it's raining?
You need to be in touch with your opposition manager. See competition rules for details of what to do when rain is imminent or possible.
If you are the home team, go to the courts and decide about ONE HOUR before scheduled play if the match can go ahead or not. Courts do dry out, and play should proceed if at all possible.
9. How should the match be played?
See website 'player information' above.
One set of singles is played at the same time as one set of doubles. 6 sets of tennis in all. Sets are 6 game tie break with normal (long) deuce.
Start with 1 V 1 singles while 2/3 V 2/3 doubles is played. Then play 2 v 2 singles and 1/3 v 1/3 doubles. Then 3 v 3 singles and 1/2 v 1/2 doubles.
10. Should parents be on the court?
No. Junior comp tennis should be as 'hands off' as possible and parents should remain off court. Kids should score their own matches. Tips for them are to call out the score after each point, to not return faults (causes confusion) and to return balls to the server after each point (saves wasting time). If kids need help with scoring early in the season, ONE parent (only) can go on court to assist. If they lose track of the score, they should go back to where they could remember it.
Parents can be asked to assist with any dispute but only one parent from each team should be on court, if at all.
11. What do we need to do when playing at Red Hill?
Bag the grass courts when the match is finished, and close the clubhouse and gate when you leave. You may wish to check the bathrooms early in the day for any (ahem) surprises.
12. Any tips for getting ready before the match?
It can be advisable to be in touch with the opposition manager during the week to confirm the time and venue. This can save a lot of time if you suddenly need to find them on Sunday morning (rain etc )
13. What about the playing order?
Your player order is the suggested ranking (strongest at number 1) and should be adhered to at all times. It can be changed if you or the players think that it is wrong -please let Libby know if this is the case - and can only be changed in the early rounds of play. You can incur penalties if players play out of order. For 4 person teams, players should stay in rank order.
14. Why do I need a WVP card?
This is a Tennis Australia legal requirement as part of Child Safeguarding policy. Thanks for your cooperation.
15. Junior CTL costs
All players must be a member of a TA affiliated club . Our junior membership costs are $50 for half year and $100 for full year. Not many clubs offer a half year membership.
The team player fee of $85 per player covers the team entry fee payable to Tennis ACT (currently $150) plus third party court hire. We choose to pay for court hire at other clubs rather than host 2 home matches at the same time. This is because after recent rain, the clay courts are soft and can be unplayable. Rather than cancelling matches or finding alternative courts at the last minute, we choose to host some 'home' matches at other clubs such as Yarraluma or Barton. To hire these courts costs the club about $50 per match.
