New Shelter Planned for Talgarno Tennis Club

The Talgarno Tennis Club has taken the next step in improving community facilities at the Talgarno Recreation Reserve, with plans lodged for the construction of a new, modern shelter to replace the existing aging and damaged clubroom.

A Fresh, Functional Design

The proposed shelter will be located to the north of the existing clubroom, which is set to be demolished. The new structure will include a covered shelter area, storage room, and accessible ramp with handrails for improved access.

The building will feature Colorbond Surfmist walls with trims and roofing in Cottage Green, creating a fresh look that complements the surrounding landscape. The design also includes decking, steps, and a ramp with handrails, ensuring accessibility for all members of the community.

Improving Safety and Accessibility

Club president Jarrod Stephenson said the updated plans reflect the club’s commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and functional space for players and visitors.

“This project has been designed to meet modern accessibility standards and to better serve the needs of the Talgarno community,” Mr Stephenson said.
“We’ve worked closely with the Towong Shire Council and the Recreation Reserve Committee to ensure the design balances functionality, safety, and the natural setting.”

Environmental Considerations

As part of the planning process, an arborist assessment was undertaken to evaluate nearby vegetation. The report identified four immature trees that will require removal for the proposed construction. The club has applied for permission to remove these trees and will offset the removal with native vegetation credits.

“We’ve carefully considered how to minimise the tree removals,” Mr Stephenson explained.
“Alternative locations for the shelter would have created drainage and parking issues so we’ve chosen the most balanced approach.”

Supporting Local Sport and Community

The project will provide a much-needed upgrade for the Talgarno Tennis Club, ensuring local players and visiting teams have access to a weather-protected space for match days and community gatherings. Once complete, the new shelter will enhance the recreational reserve’s overall amenity and provide a lasting benefit for residents and visitors alike.

The club’s updated plans and supporting documentation have been submitted to Towong Shire Council for assessment. The club hopes to receive a Notice of Decision shortly and will proceed to a building permit to get construction underway.
