Tennis Victoria is proud to recognise Liston Tennis Club as our Affiliate of the Month for October 2025!
Liston Tennis Club has set a new benchmark for inclusion in community tennis, hosting Victoria’s first-ever Blind Tennis Championships in Williamstown last Friday. The event brought together athletes from across the state, highlighting both the skill of the players and the club’s strong commitment to accessibility.
The championships featured two B1 players, with Brendon Spencer taking the win over Tess Whelan, and a combined B2–B4 category of eight players, where Jasper Steeds claimed victory after a thrilling final against Robert Fletcher. Each category reflected different levels of vision loss, with tailored bounce rules and match support ensuring every player could compete on equal ground.
The day attracted close to 200 spectators, filling the courtside with energy and encouragement. Beyond the competition itself, Liston’s hospitality stood out, from thoughtful meal service to the careful attention paid to players’ needs throughout the event. “I’ve played in state championships all around the world and nothing compared to this”, said Robert Fletcher, reflecting on the day. At the end of the day, every participant received a free club membership for the year, reinforcing the club’s long-term commitment to the blind and low vision tennis community.
Liston’s involvement doesn’t stop there. The club is also fielding a team, captained by Robert Fletcher, in the inaugural Blind Tennis League at Melbourne Park, further strengthening its role in shaping a more inclusive future for the sport.
Congratulations to everyone at Liston Tennis Club. Your passion and leadership continue to expand access to tennis and inspire others across the Victorian tennis community.
