Tennis West Volunteer Achievement Award

Congratulations to Steve Burdett for winning the Tennis West KC Australia Volunteer Achievement Award 2024!

After retiring from his successful career as a Professional Structural Engineer, Steve was determined to find ways to apply his considerable energies and skills to give back to the community.

Two stints as President meant Steve knew the significant challenges ahead for the East Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club, which included delivering on a well-considered Capital Works Strategic Plan that spanned 5 years and over $1M dollars of potential projects.

So it was to the delivery of that Strategic Plan that Steve decided to direct his energies, to the great benefit of not just EFLTC, but to all who visit and use our Club facilities, now and for many years to come.

Appointed as Projects Administrator by the EFLTC Capital Works Subcommittee (established in 2018), Steve set to work scoping and delivering the following projects for the Club:

Stage 1: Hall Upgrade $400k (completed May 2021)

Stage 2: Deep Sewer Connection $150k (completed July 2023)

Stage 3: Shaded Spectator Tunnel $30k (completion due April 2024)

Stage 4: Western Hardcourt Floodlighting $200k (completion due May 2024)

Stage 5: Clubhouse and Court Renovation ~$500k (future)

From the original scoping of the Capital Works Strategic Plan through to project delivery, Steve has shown Leadership, Creativity, Courage and Conviction, to challenge the status quo, and deliver game-changing outcomes for the Tennis Community.

The impact of Steve's contribution to the East Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club is unprecedented in our long history. The successful delivery (both on-time and on-budget) of these key projects, despite massive challenges, has been pivotal to the significant turnaround in the Club's situation from perilously low membership and financial constraints, to a thriving Club, with strong membership growth, a strong financial position, and an exciting future.

Steve contribution to EFTLC, and to the sport of tennis will echo down the years.
