Coaching

Going to the nth degree

Recently our club was gifted a special book on the life of renowned Australian tennis coach  Ian Barclay, written by our very own caoch Mike Spruzen. Rising to prominence in the tennis world from the 1970's Ian's story is a remarkable tale of dedication to kids' tennis which reached the dizzy heights of Grand Slam Wimbledon success not only for the young player Pat Cash as Wimbledon Men's Singles champ, but for the many juniors who reached top level on the world stage.

It's a great read - inspiring and sprinkled with handy tennis tips on how to play the game and the cliches that stand the test of time .... "never, ever lob on a match point"...  "play steadily, keep the ball in play, and wait for the shorter mid-court to approach the net and execute the volley". ..."make sure you get the first serve in, don't let the lob get over your head, keep the ball over the net at all costs, keep moving forward, don't hit the million-to-one shot..."

Ian Barclay lived and breathed tennis and devoted his life to helping young ones develop into players.

I encourage every tennis enthusiast to have a look ... and now we just need to add author Mike's signature to the inside cover alongside Ian's.
