Game On at the Amazon Women’s Tennis CoCB Compass Doubles

Written by Soojin Park

On June 29th, the Amazon Women’s Tennis Compass Doubles was held at Cintra Park, concluding the Amazon Women’s Tennis City of Canada Bay Community Development Grant Program. It was a perfect day with sunny skies, no wind, and just the right temperature. There was laughter, great energy, and so much encouragement going around. Honestly, that sense of community is what I’ve come to love most about Amazon Women’s Tennis.

Looking to play sport with other LGBTQIA+ women, I joined Amazon Women's Tennis in 2022.  I didn’t know anything about tennis, and had never even held a racquet. I was welcomed, supported, and encouraged every step of the way, even though the journey wasn’t easy. I’ve had a few injuries, received a black eye at the net, and until late 2024, had lost every single match. I was frustrated, discouraged, and honestly, a little embarrassed. I wasn’t sure if I should keep going.

But I kept showing up.

Everything changed when I joined the Amazon Women’s Tennis coaching sessions in December 2024. These sessions, run by Coach Nicola and supported by the City of Canada Bay, gave me a completely new perspective on how to manage my energy, move more efficiently, and focus on what really matters. At first, I thought tennis was just about hitting the ball harder. But over time, I’ve learned it’s really about strategy, timing, and mindset. I learned that I was using too much movement in my forehand and serve. I even recorded and analysed my strokes to improve.

Coach Nicola always reminded me to relax. That one word has stuck with me. Eventually, I stopped fighting myself. I accepted my pace, my energy level, and my age. I started playing with more kindness toward myself. That’s when things really started to shift. I’m still learning, but now I truly enjoy the process. Big thanks to Coach Nicola for the guidance.

In March this year, I volunteered at the Amazon Women’s Tennis Open Day. I simply showed up to give back. It turned out to be a wonderful surprise. So many women came along, and more than 200 sausages disappeared at the barbecue. It was a great opportunity for people to try tennis in a relaxed and welcoming environment. There was no pressure and no strict rules. Everyone played and connected, whether they were brand new or experienced. It was beautiful to witness.

The format of the Compass Doubles tournament makes it a truly inclusive event.  After four matches across two rounds, the teams self-sorted into four divisions, where they play off for the win.  But the tournament was not just about the tennis. We were treated to delicious pumpkin soup and olive oil pasta for lunch. We shared stories, encouraged one another, and played with heart. The best part was that it didn’t matter what level anyone was playing at. We were all there because we love the game and the community. Every single player truly enjoyed the tennis. Some players moved between courts cheering for their friends. Others offered quiet claps or warm words of encouragement. And yes, someone may have been loudly cheering with excitement, and that someone may have been me. The energy around the courts was full of care, joy, and connection.

The day ended with high spirits and great tennis. As for me, I will never forget it. I took home my first winner’s medal in the South Direction division. It might seem like a small moment, but it meant the world to me. Thank you to my doubles partner. We made it together.

Congratulations to the winners and all the players. Well done to everyone.

This wonderful program would not be possible without the support of the City of Canada Bay and the Amazon Women’s Tennis committee. Thank you for creating a space where people like me can learn, grow, and fall in love with the game.
