Tennis at the Park #3 

In the late 1800s and early 1900s many of our club Presidents were well known and respected members of the Queanbeyan township. Several of these men now have streets, roads, places and sports fields named after them. Here are a few you may recognise.

QPTC President 1891: Captain George Tompsitt – Mounted Infantryman and Mayor (Tompsitt Drive, Jerrabomberra)

QPTC President 1901-1902: Charles O’Hanlon – Government Engineer for Roads, Shire Clerk and choir conductor (O’Hanlon Road, Queanbeyan)

QPTC President 1907-1909: George Ling – Headmaster Queanbeyan Public School (Ling Place, Karabar)

QPTC President 1919-1958: W.B Freebody – Alderman, Mayor and businessman (Freebody Oval, Queanbeyan). Our longest serving club president – 39 years! More to come on W.B Freebody in our next news item.
