Meet William Byrne Freebody—a name synonymous with the rich tapestry of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan's tennis history. Arriving in Queanbeyan in 1907, Freebody quickly became a cornerstone of the local community and tennis scene. His passion for the sport was evident both on and off the court.
As the longest-serving President of the then Park Tennis Club (and in the club's history), Freebody's leadership spanned decades. He was instrumental in the club's growth, overseeing the construction of two additional courts and a clubhouse at Campbell St, ensuring tennis remained a thriving community activity.
Freebody wasn't just an administrator; he was an accomplished player. Representing Queanbeyan at numerous Country Week tournaments, his dedication and skill earned him the affectionate title of "Mr. Tennis of Queanbeyan."
While club president, Freebody donated the Freebody Gold Cup for the winner of the men’s singles at the club’s popular Easter Tournament. The cup was nine inches high on an oak base with eight gold plates attached for engraving. If the cup was won by a person three times it, then became the property of that person. The cup was won and retained by Max Anderson in 1953 from the Newcastle region.
In celebrating 140 years of tennis at the Park, we remember the legacy of W.B. Freebody— a true champion of both the Queanbeyan community and tennis
