Tennis at the Park #7

In April 1950, the club’s Easter tournament drew large entries and concluded under “perfect sunshine.” The prestigious W.B. Freebody Gold Cup (valued at £160) was won by M. Anderson of Sydney, who defeated M. Wallace 6‑2, 4‑6, 6‑2.

The following year saw record participation at the same event, with local and visiting players battling it out across the courts, with the community turning up in force to support.

Highlights included:

🏆 Men’s Open Singles (Freebody Gold Cup): M. Anderson retained the title, beating W. Wallace 6‑3, 6‑1.

🏆 Other winners included P. Roberts (Eden–Monaro Men’s Singles), Miss J. Martin (Ladies' Singles), and mixed doubles champions among them.

All that was missing was a place for players to gather, share a cup of tea, and celebrate the game they loved....

In the February of 1954 some 300 people attended the official opening of the Queanbeyan Park tennis pavilion. This included some sparkling tennis in exhibition matches played by a squad of international players, including Neale Fraser. The same pavilion remains at the Queanbeyan Park today 💙💛
