Tennis at the Park #9

A special moment from our 140th celebrations last month included the recreation of a photo from our club's history.

The photo was taken ~1956 and includes Norma Crawley (nee Southwell) playing with her back to us against an unknown opponent. It looks like a sunny day for the spectators watching on from the clubhouse.

Norma was a regular player at NSW Country Week from the early 1940s. Between 1945 and 1966 she won 8 Queanbeyan Resident titles; and 5 Queanbeyan Open titles; 20 ACT Resident and 8 ACT Open titles. As a member of an ACT 50+ ladies team, Norma won Australian Team title; and won the 50+ Australian Ladies Double title in 1977. Norma's father, Elias Southwell also donated to the club the Southwell Challenge Cup back in the day.

In the photo taken this year, Norma's daughter, Chris is playing with our club president, Wendy. We had spectators watching on from the clubhouse too. What a memento and wonderful example of the generations of families who have played at Queanbeyan Park.

Do you recognise the player closest to the clubhouse in the photo from ~1956? We'd love to hear from you!

Thanks to Carterslens22 for helping us recreate this moment.
