In coordination with Bayside Regional Tennis Association (BRTA) and Moorabbin & Districts Junior Tennis Association (MDJTA), Murrumbeena Tennis club are calling for nominations to compete in the Associations Junior League (AJL).

AJL brings together competitive players from across Metropolitan Melbourne and Geelong in an age specific format that includes a best of two sets singles and a first to 8 games doubles set.  Teams on the day consist of 4 players.

Each year BRTA and MDJTA come together to enter teams in the following age groups:

  • 10 & Under (mixed teams - but it can also be all boys and all girls)
  • 12 & Under (boys and girls)
  • 14 & Under (boys and girls)
  • 16 & Under (boys and girls)
  • 18 & Under

* This is an underage competition and the age is determined as at 31 December 2020.

There is more travel for AJL compared to local competition.  Matches are played on neutral courts donated for use by our clubs.  Each team will have a volunteer Team Manager appointed.  As a general rule, all players who nominate will have the opportunity to join a team.  Team selection is considered an important step on the Junior Development Pathway.

This season Tennis Victoria is considering some flexibility to include Sunday afternoon matches to allow players to play both local BRTA Sunday junior competition and AJL in the same season.  We are awaiting further information and would encourage players to nominate for both the regular BRTA Sunday morning and AJL competitions.  Players for selected AJL teams will play the AJL competition as a priority but as available will also be eligible to play the normal Sunday morning competitions.

The AJL season is scheduled to commence on Sunday, 16 August.  It generally runs for 10 weeks with no play during school holidays or Melbourne Cup Weekend.  The Grand Final is usually played on the last weekend in November.

The cost to play in the 2020 AJL season is $70 per player. This fee includes:

  • A team shirt - optional. If a player has a shirt from past seasons the team fee is reduced to $55.
  • Eight new tennis balls for each round
  • Team entry fees
  • Pre-season get-together and training session with qualified coaches.
