Thursday Night Spring Comp - New leaders

40 plus players have graced the courts this season as we just tick past the halfway point of the competition. The competition has continued to gain momentum with what started with just 11 players earlier this year, has now grown to 33 players plus many regular reserves. It has been a busy season with lots of old, young, new and returning faces which was brought the competition up a notch and allowed for some new stories at the end of the night.
It was super tight in Div 1 this week, at the top, with only 4 games between splitting 1st to 5th. Scotty ‘Shorts Only’ Dixon sits at the top after a week off with a bye. Well played, Scotty. He will be fresh next week as he partners up with Alejandro Carrera, they will be the team to beat.
In Div 2 Jaimie and Jas have made their mark since the competition opened up to men AND women who have both been nested in the top four for most of the season. Simon Barnhill is sitting somewhat comfortably with a 6 game lead on 2nd place which is well deserved since his lowest score is 16.
Div 3 is becoming the spot for most improvement with lots of players starting to hit their straps. It also has seen a wide range of ages, just last night two players had 56 years between them and the old fella enjoyed it when he ripped a running backhand down the line on the young one, they shook hands moments later with a 4-all draw, a rivalry in the making perhaps? Roy Cat is well on top of the leaderboard with impressive and consistent scores each week. Some have been heard saying he may be in the wrong division. Not to worry 1st and 2nd will be promoted next season with the bottom two being relegated.
Xavier Boucher claimed the unofficial title of super-sub after being called with little to no notice multiple times as well as bringing a freshly baked cake this week. It was fitting as we farewell Brendon Augustus who has become part of the furniture over the last 12 months. Brendon is returning to his family in Sydney and we wish him all the best and thank him for his competition as well as his enjoyable on and off-court banter. He will be sorely missed.

As you know we welcome additional players to the reserve list and we hope to keep expanding to Div 4 and 5.  Please get in touch with the Griffith Tennis Club with your name and mobile number for more information: info@griffithtennisclub.com.au.
