Amazon Women's Tennis celebrate 30 years of being a safe space for LGBTQIA+ Women at the City of Canada Bay Open Day!
Amazon Women's Tennis welcomed LGBTQIA+ and allied women from the City of Canada Bay and surrounds to enjoy a tennis open day at Cintra Park Tennis Courts.
The support of the City of Canada Bay Council Community Development Grants program made this day possible.
The Open Day attracted 74 attendees, featuring clinics with coaches Nicola Tiernan and Tracey McMillan. Cardio Tennis sessions added an energetic twist, and plenty got involved with the serving practice session, to further develop their technique of one of the more challenging components of the game. All courts were full of social matches throughout the morning, which also served as a chance to meet other attendees and get a feel for doubles game play.
A special highlight was the attendance of Superintendent Christine McDonald, of the Burwood Police Area Command, whose talk emphasized the importance of inclusivity and local authority support for safe, welcoming spaces.
Community Connection
The day also featured a social area for participants to relax and connect with fellow tennis lovers. To wrap up the morning, a delicious and well received sausage sizzle was offered. The Open Day demonstrated the local community support required to continue having spaces where LGBTQIA+ Women and all trans, gender diverse and non-binary people can participate and enjoy sport.
Looking Ahead
The City of Canada Bay Community Development grant allows Amazon Women's Tennis to build capacity within the LGA, hosting coaching clinics and social play at Cintra throughout March and beyond. Keep an eye out for these updates! Amazon Women's Tennis is excited for the future and continued growth.
A big thank you to Tennis NSW also, who provided gifts for players, as well as our Welcome Marquee for the day!
